Americans in panic as PayPal and Venmo outages leaves millions unable to access money

PayPal and Venmo are experiencing major outages, preventing millions of users from sending or receiving payments. 

Downdetector, a site that monitors online outage, shows issues hit the digital payment apps at around 8:00am ET.

PayPal has around 434 million active users worldwide, while Venmo has nearly 90 million users in the US.

Users have reported difficulties accessing payments, transferring funds, and logging into their accounts. 

'I sent someone $200, and the money was withdrawn from my account, but the other person didn’t receive it,' one PayPal user shared on Downdetector.

'There’s no record of the transaction on either end, and I have no idea where the money went.'

Another user shared: 'I can login to PayPal, but its not letting me make payments.' 

Meanwhile, some Venmo users have also reported problems receiving direct deposits, with many affected during scheduled paycheck deliveries.

'I just transferred some money and its not showing in my account!!! What's going on?' a PayPal user shared on Downdetector.

PayPal's service dashboard shows disruptions for several services.

'We are still observing impact to Retail Checkout, Online Checkout and Braintree in our production Environment,' the company shared in a statement. 

'Our Technical teams are actively investigating and working to mitigate the impact as quickly as possible. We will continue to provide updates as the situation progresses.'

The outage is also impacting PayPal Merchant and Partners report.

'This issue is contributing to missed delivery for reports in the Pacific Standard Timezone,' the company said. 

'Our technical team continue to generate the delayed reports and we may observe impact to the Merchant Reporting and Partner Reporting for accounts subscribed to the EST Timezone.
