Disney+ quietly hikes its prices in the UK yet again - as furious users vow to CANCEL their subscriptions

It's one of the most popular streaming services, with more than seven million subscribers in the UK alone.

But despite being owned by a multi-billion-dollar company, Disney+ is hiking its prices yet again.

The streaming giant has quietly bumped up the price of one of its subscription tiers in the UK by an extra £10 per year.

Angry customers took to social media to complain about Disney's latest price hike, which comes a year after it started charging people to share passwords

The company is already dealing with a massive subscriber backlash over the Jimmy Kimmel suspension, following his comments over Charlie Kirk's murder.

On X (formerly Twitter), one user said: 'Ugh another streaming price hike? At this point I might just go back to DVDs.'

Another person said: 'Put the squeeze on Disney. Cancel your subscriptions. Your kids don't need their woke garbage.'

A third posted: 'Cancel this trash! #Cancel Disney and ABC.'

Disney+ quietly hikes its prices in the UK yet again - as furious users vow to cancel their subscriptions

Currently, Disney+ UK offers three monthly plans – Standard with Ads (£4.99 per month), Standard (£8.99 per month) and Premium (£12.99 per month).

As well as these monthly options, Standard and Premium are available at a yearly cost of £89.90 and £129.90, respectively.

However, Disney+ is set to increase the price of the annual Standard plan by £10 – from £89.90 to the new price of £99.90.

The price hike – effective from September 30 – is revealed in the small print at the bottom of the Disney+ homepage

Meanwhile, a banner at the top of the page urges people to 'save 10%' by purchasing 12 months of Disney+ Standard for £89.90 before the offer 'ends Sept 29'.

On Disney+, being debited annually works out cheaper than being debited monthly. If you're debited monthly, you're paying a grand total per year of £107.88 for Standard and £155.88 for Premium.

So if you're on the annual tier, you're saving either £17.98 or £25.98 over the course of 12 months.

However, due to the incoming price hike, that saving for the Standard tier is shrinking to just £7.98 – making users question whether it's worth committing to an annual agreement.

Or Goren, consumer expert at Cord Busters, said the price hike comes at the 'worst possible time'.

'Disney+ is hitting UK wallets hard once again, announcing another price increase,' he said in a blog post

'It's part of a broader industry trend that's seeing most major streaming services treat annual price bumps as inevitable.'

Mr Goren added that there have been 'significant changes' to the service that Disney would argue justify the higher costs.

For example, it has just added Saturday evening La Liga football matches featuring Real Madrid, Barcelona, and other Spanish giants.

It has also secured exclusive rights to the UEFA Women's Champions League for five seasons.

'These sports additions represent Disney's plan to become 'essential viewing' that subscribers can't easily cancel,' said the expert.

This latest increase continues Disney+'s 'relentless march away from its budget-friendly roots', having originally positioned itself as a cheaper alternative to Netflix.

When Disney+ launched in the UK in March 2020, it cost £5.99 monthly with 4K streaming and four concurrent streams included.

Fast forward to today, and maintaining that same experience requires the Premium tier at £12.99 monthly – a 117 per cent increase in just over five years.

However, Disney is not the only streaming service that's treating price increases as an annual tradition.

Apple TV+ recently raised its prices again – jumping from £8.99 to £9.99 per month.

Netflix hiked prices last in February and will likely announce another round of increases in the coming months, Mr Goren predicts.
