Phillip Schofield has said he is "heartbroken" by the death of his "magnificent" mother, Pat.

In an Instagram post, alongside pictures of himself and his mum, the former This Morning presenter said: "I love you mum, forever", after what he called a "heartbreaking weekend".

He wrote: "Over three days, we held her, loved her, hugged her and said everything that needed to be said."

He said Pat, who was reportedly 88, was "calm, peaceful, beautiful and dignified. I will forever be proud and privileged that she was my mum".

Schofield, 62, added his "magnificent" mother had joined his father, her "beloved Brian", who died in 2008.

He offered "eternal thanks" to the paramedics and the Treliske [Royal Cornwall Hospital] A&E and Critical Care team, describing the NHS staff as "my mum's and our angels", whose "love and care has been our saviour".

"I love you mum, forever," Schofield added, with a heartbreak emoji.

He later shared a video of a plane flying overhead, captioning it: "God I loved her for wanting to do this. One of the oldest ever ladies to wing walk."

Last month, Schofield starred in Channel 5 programme Cast Away, in which he spent 10 days alone on a small island off the coast of Madagascar.

It was his first return to a TV series since leaving ITV in May 2023 after admitting to an "unwise but not illegal" secret affair with a younger male colleague.

He said at the time he had "lost everything" after admitting to the affair, and that the fallout had had a "catastrophic effect" on his mind.

An external review found that ITV made "considerable efforts" to find out the truth about an alleged relationship between Schofield and a co-worker on This Morning in 2019 but was "unable to uncover the relevant evidence" until the presenter's own admission.

Schofield "reluctantly declined" to take part in the review, carried out by Jane Mulcahy KC, because of "the risk to his health".
