It's one of the most popular internet providers in the UK.

But Hyperoptic has crashed this morning, leaving thousands unable to access the internet.

According to Down Detector, the problems started at around 10:00am and are affecting users across the UK.

Hyperoptic soon confirmed the outage on X adding it is 'working on a resolution'.

'We’re aware of some connection issues caused by technical problems with our servers,' it tweeted.

'Our team is actively investigating and working on a resolution.

'Thank you for your patience and understanding – we’re committed to getting you back online as quickly as possible!'

About 45 minutes later it said the issue is resolved and affected customers should be back online, but some are still reporting issues.

Several disgruntled users have also taken to X (formerly Twitter) to discuss the outage.

'Complete outage in North London - can't even access your website to check service status (and that's using mobile network data, not wifi)... an update would be great as it seems we're not the only ones,' one user wrote.

Another added: 'Excellent - usually very reliable #Hyperoptic looks like it’s down…no internet isn’t ideal.'

And one vented: 'your service has gotten so bad over the last 6 months, what happened?? from connection issues to support response times everything has gotten so much worse....'

At 11:13am, Hyperoptic said on X that all affected customers should be back online, thanking them for their patience.

What causes a broadband outage?

A broadband outage is a problem with your provider’s network that causes you and others to lose internet connection.

Outages can happen on a small scale, like just in your own home, or it can be a wider issue affecting your entire neighborhood or region.

Causes include cyberattacks, equipment failure, or even big storms that damage infrastructure.

Another possible cause is human error - for example, construction workers might accidentally cut through a cable while working on a road or building.

There are also cases of vandalism where someone intentionally damages internet infrastructure.

More local outages, concentrated on a specific neighbourhood, could be a fault with internal systems run by the provider, between the provider’s broadband exchange and the cabinet on your street.

Alternatively, there may be overwhelming internet traffic in the area that is slowing performance.
