Eleven schoolchildren have been killed and five injured in a horror crash between a private scholar transport vehicle and a truck.

The crash occurred on Monday morning in the south of Gauteng.

Speaking on the sidelines of a back-to-school event in Eldorado Park, Education MEC Matome Chiloane said the vehicle was ferrying pupils to the Vereeniging/Vanderbijlpark area at the time.

“The information I have is that the taxi collided with a truck ... We lost 11 learners and five are en route to hospital, if they have not arrived yet,” said Chiloane, who was heading to the scene.

“We are rushing there,” he added.
