Three security guards and a tenant at an apartment building in New Doornfontein, Johannesburg, suffered third-degree burns when a transformer exploded in the early hours of Monday, causing part of the building to collapse.

Debris, rubble, and injured residents were scattered across the scene of the explosion at the Ithemba building.

Tenants said the incident occurred between 04:45 and 05:00 after residents were awakened by a strong smell coming from the transformer.

According to them, three security guards and a resident rushed towards the transformer, which is housed in a small utility storage room attached to the building, and attempted to extinguish a blaze that had broken out in the room.
