Six people were killed on Sunday afternoon when the minibus taxi they were travelling in collided with an SUV on the R540 near Dullstroom, Mpumalanga.

The T-bone crash occurred at around 14:00. All six victims, who died at the scene, were passengers in the taxi.

Eight others, seven passengers and the SUV driver, sustained serious injuries, while the taxi driver suffered minor injuries. The injured were transported to a hospital in Belfast for treatment.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie said the cause of the crash was still under investigation.

“We remain deeply concerned by the number of fatalities caused by road crashes that could be avoided with more responsible driving. Motorists should always be mindful that their driving mistakes could be devastating for them and other road users,” he said.

Macie noted that the tragedy comes during Transport Month, when the importance of road safety is heavily emphasised.

It follows another fatal crash on Saturday on the N11 between Middelburg and Loskop Dam, where four people, including a child, died after a Toyota Avanza overturned. Three women and the child were declared dead on the scene, while the driver and another passenger sustained minor injuries.

The MEC extended condolences to the affected families and wished the injured a swift recovery.
