A man's burnt body and a dead 20-year-old woman were separately discovered in Cape Town, while a house fire led to the deaths of two women and injury to another in Johannesburg.

A case of murder is being investigated after an unknown man's body was found burnt next to a railway line in Cape Town on Christmas Day.

"Philippi East police registered a murder case for investigation after the body of an unknown man was discovered next to the railway line in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East, on Monday, 25 December 2023 at about 12:05," said police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg.

"The victim was burnt to death. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation."
