The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) says it is "overwhelmed" by investigations into the large number of deaths resulting from police shootouts in KwaZulu-Natal.

Between 6 October and 3 November, KwaZulu-Natal police reported that 19 people had been killed in seven shootouts with police.

IPID spokesperson Robbie Raburabu said there were "several cases" the organisation was investigating, but added that shootouts in KwaZulu-Natal were "not a new thing".
