The DA accused the ANC of deferring an investigation into the July 2021 unrest until after next year's elections to appease ANC factions as the National Assembly is set to approve the Portfolio Committee on Police to pass the buck to their successors in the Seventh Parliament.

On 7 July 2021, corruption-accused former president Jacob Zuma handed himself over to the Estcourt Correctional Facility to serve a prison sentence of 15 months for contempt of court after he refused to obey the Constitutional Court's order to appear before the Zondo Commission.

Soon thereafter, violence erupted in KwaZulu-Natal, spreading to parts of Gauteng. The unrest included looting and damage to infrastructure.
