Former Bosasa chief operating officer Angelo Agrizzi has pleaded guilty to corruption and money laundering, but has escaped jail time.

Agrizzi appeared virtually – while wearing an oxygen mask – in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Thursday, where the State read the plea and sentencing agreement into the record.

Judge Mokhine Mosopa rigorously questioned the State and defence on Agrizzi’s health – a key factor behind the agreement for a wholly suspended sentence.

In terms of the agreement, Agrizzi pleaded guilty to corruption relating to more than R1.8 billion worth of prison tenders that Bosasa and its subsidiaries secured between 2004 and 2007.

He also pleaded guilty to corruption regarding kickbacks that former ANC MP Vincent Smith allegedly received from Bosasa.

The court ultimately accepted the plea and sentencing agreement, and found Agrizzi guilty of three counts of corruption and one count of money laundering.

He was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for each corruption count and a further 10 years for money laundering.

The sentences were wholly suspended on condition that Agrizzi works with authorities on cases that are under investigation, and testifies truthfully in any trials in which he may be called upon to give evidence as a State witness.
