A father will appear in court for raping his one month old daughter.

A 31-year-old man will appear in the Brits Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of raping his one-month-old baby daughter.

North West Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena condemned the incident in a statement, calling it "shocking".

He applauded the police and the community for their swift action, which led to the man's arrest on Thursday in Krokodildrift West, Brits.

Police said the mother was preparing food outside their shack while the father was inside, sleeping beside the baby.

"The mother suddenly heard the baby crying and noticed when she entered that something was wrong as the father and the baby were undressed."

The mother reportedly screamed for help, and one of the neighbours called the police.

The baby was admitted to Brits District Hospital after a medical examination.

Her father has been charged with rape.
