A bystander was among four people shot dead during a cash-in-transit heist in Soshanguve, Tshwane, on Wednesday for which eight people were arrested.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a cash van was ambushed in Soutpan Road.
"It is alleged that a cash in transit van was blocked on the road, and a number of armed suspects came out, overpowering the crew, and bombed the cash van.
"As they fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, the members from the Tactical Response Team (TRT) responded, and a chase ensued," Nevhuhulwi said.
She said the armed gang opened fire on the TRT members, who retaliated.
"During the shootout, three of the suspects were killed, and eight injured suspects were arrested," she added.
