  • A Cape Town police officer has been arrested for allegedly raping a child.
  • The 6-year-old boy and his mother had been visiting the officer's home when the incident happened.
  • The child reported the matter to a community member the next day.

A Cape Town police officer has been arrested for allegedly raping a 6-year-old boy.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested the officer, who was stationed at the Forensic Science Laboratory in Plattekloof, after he allegedly raped the child on Sunday.

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said: "The boy's mother visited the police officer, who is a neighbour. She was accompanied by her 6-year-old boy. The mother fell asleep on the couch after they drank alcohol, and the police officer allegedly raped the boy while the mother was sleeping."

The following day, the boy reported the incident to one of the community members and a case of rape was reported to IPID, said Shuping.

The officer appeared in court on Thursday.

The case was postponed to 1 July for a formal bail application.

The officer will remain in custody.

In 2023, IPID arrested another Western Cape police officer for the alleged rape of a woman in a holding cell.

The woman had been arrested in Citrusdal for assault and was detained in the early hours of the morning. A constable then allegedly went into the holding cell and raped her.

She reported the incident to another police officer who reported for duty in the morning. 

The offending officer was detained in Piketberg on has since appeared in the Clanwilliam Magistrate's Court.
