A forensic investigator has told the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Durban the eThekwini metro's decision to cancel the contract of his company, Integrity Forensic Solutions (IFS), was a calculated move by officials to collapse the racketeering, fraud, and corruption case against former mayor Zandile Gumede and 21 others.

In addition, IFS director Leo Saunders told the court in an affidavit, eThekwini officials, including eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda and city manager Musa Mbhele, cancelled the contract to stop IFS from continuing with another investigation that has lifted the lid on the theft of R1.6 billion from eThekwini's water and sanitation department.

Saunders made the revelations in an explosive application filed at the court in February, in which he asked for the reinstatement of the contract.
