Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has described the latest crime statistics as "absolutely disturbing" and called on Police Minister Bheki Cele to resign.

Winde was responding to a question in the Western Cape Legislature on Thursday afternoon.

The premier was asked for the provincial government’s response to the escalation in violent crimes, including the mass murders in Gugulethu, Mfuleni and surrounds, and in attacks on international tourists in townships such as Nyanga and whether there were plans to increase the resources to fight crime.
