The IFP says the ANC's decision to strip eThekwini metro's Mxolisi Kaunda of his mayoral chain had nothing to do with its decision to form a coalition with the ANC, DA and National Freedom Party (NFP).
Addressing the media on Wednesday during the party's announcement that it had decided to enter into a government of national unity (GNU), IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa said he respected the ANC's decision to recall Kaunda.
He said: "No, the IFP, under no circumstances, no matter how much we are unhappy with eThekwini - because our wish was, if we won the election, [to] consider the disbandment of eThekwini municipality - could we use a local government sphere issue to bargain at a national and provincial level because people did not vote for the local government."
