A baby was reunited with her mother after a nanny allegedly took the child from his mother’s home.
A 35-year-old nanny is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday after allegedly stealing a 9-month-old baby from his mother’s home.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said the child’s mother returned to her Durban home on Saturday, 27 September, and discovered that the nanny and her son were missing.

When she contacted the nanny, the woman claimed she was in Empangeni but failed to explain why she had left with the baby. She also insisted that the mother come alone to fetch her child.
“The matter was reported at Durban Central police station, and all relevant police units were immediately on board in trying to assist with the investigation into this matter,” said Magwaza.
“In the early hours of Sunday morning, a police operation was conducted at Empangeni, where the 35-year-old woman was arrested. The child was found unharmed and taken for precautionary medical examination.”
Magwaza added that investigations revealed that the nanny had allegedly told her boyfriend the baby was theirs, and he had been giving her R2 500 a month to support the child.
He did not explain how long the woman worked as a nanny.
The woman faces charges of child theft and will appear in court on 29 September.
