A shootout between two warring Eastern Cape taxi factions, which claimed the lives of three people, have left residents and public servants terrified as a taxi boss admits the council is unable to broker peace.

The dispute is believed to be over control of taxi routes. 

Two taxi operators were killed in Nqanqarhu (formerly Maclear) after gunmen opened fire on a vehicle they were travelling in on Wednesday.
