Eastern Cape taxi operators have instructed the provincial government to increase the number of officials responsible for processing scholar transport programme invoices, warning of the risk of further economic collapse.

This was revealed at a high-level meeting in Stirling, East London, on Thursday night, to resolve a shutdown that resulted in the closure of some schools and businesses in the province on Thursday morning as taxi operators protested the non-payment of their scholar transport programme invoices.

Operators said the invoices, which they claimed amounted to R120 million, had not been paid since January.
