Eight people were killed in two shootouts with police in KwaZulu-Natal and the North West.

In the KwaZulu-Natal incident, police received a tip-off that people suspected of "terrorising" Inanda residents through a spate of crimes were at a house near to Dube Village Mall in Inanda and headed to the property after 23:00.

"As the police officers approached the house, they were met with gunfire. A member of the National Intervention Unit was shot in the leg and was transported to hospital where he remains in a stable condition," police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said.

The gun battle lasted for around half an hour and police found four pistols at the scene.

A manhunt continues for more suspects. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been summoned for further investigations.

In the North West incident, four suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers were killed during a police chase and ensuing shootout.

"Four CIT robbers aged between 30 and 45 were fatally wounded … in a shootout with law enforcement agencies in Mmakau where three unlicensed firearms, including a rifle, were seized," said Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale.

It is suspected that they were planning to commit a CIT heist between North West and Gauteng.

"The information was operationalised and led the team to the N4 highway where the identified suspects' vehicle was observed."

"A high-speed chase and shootout ensued as soon as the suspects realised they were about to be captured," Mogale said.

They were killed when they lost control of their vehicle and collided with a fence.
