eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says the majority of the city's beaches have been declared safe ahead of the festive season.

The eThekwini Municipality says it is ready to welcome thousands of visitors this festive season after the majority of its 23 bathing beaches were declared safe.

On Thursday, Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda addressed reporters at the reopening of the Whalebone Pier in Umhlanga after it was closed for three months for renovations.

The project, which entailed extending the concrete pier, cost the City R3.2 million.
