The eThekwini Municipality has faced backlash from opposition parties after a report revealed more than R400 million in unauthorised, irregular, fruitless, and wasteful (UIFW) expenditure in the metro for the third quarter.

The Finance Agenda document, tabled before the finance committee on Wednesday, revealed the total irregular expenditure for the third quarter alone, ending 31 March 2024, amounted to R436 million.

The staggering figures follow a previously reported amount of R80.5 million in the first quarter and R566.9 million in the second quarter.
