The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has shortlisted five candidates for two vacancies on the Constitutional Court Bench - Labour Appeal Court Judge Kate Savage, advocate Alan Dodson, and Supreme Court of Appeal Judges Ashton Schippers, Nambitha Dambuza and Glenn Goosen - but the final decision rests with President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Following two days of interviews, which acting Constitutional Court Justice Ingrid Opperman withdrew from as a nominee, former justice department official Dr Madumetja Malepe faced tough questions about being under debt review and previous accusations of the theft of church funds, the JSC confirmed that it narrowed its list down to the five remaining candidates.

JSC spokesperson, advocate Sesi Baloyi stressed that the commission would not express its preference on which candidate Ramaphosa should appoint, following what is understood to be protracted private deliberations on whether the candidates should be ranked in relation to their suitability.
