Excessive lawlessness, bad behaviour, and inconsiderate conduct by motorists - these summed up the first three weeks of the festive season, especially on residential roads.

This according to Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, who on Friday said law enforcement authorities would adjust their deployment plans to ensure more attention was paid to residential areas in the evenings, leading up to the early morning, as that's where most of the accidents recorded in the first three weeks of December occurred.

Chikunga said although there had been a decline in the number of crashes and deaths, authorities had observed an emerging new trend of accidents, primarily fatal ones, occurring on local roads and not regional and national routes as had mostly been the case.
