Five men were killed in Kanana Ext 4, Tembisa, during an alleged mob justice attack on Monday.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said police received a call at about 05:50.

"Five men were found dead. The suspicion is that they were stoned to death by community members. No one has been arrested. A case of murder, with five counts, is opened for further investigations," she said.

An eyewitness, Johannes Dolo, who spoke to News24, said he was on his way to work when he saw injured men who claimed they were shot and mugged.

"I saw two guys lying down, while the other tried to stop cars on the road. I approached one of them, and they said they were shot and robbed. They said they escaped towards Phomolong, where I saw them," he said.

Dolo said motorists, an e-hailing driver and taxi driver, took three men to the Esangweni clinic.

It is not yet clear whether the men Dolo saw were part of the same attack.

Nevhuhulwi urged the community to report suspected criminal conduct, rather than resort to mob justice.

"The public is urged not to take the law into their own hands, but rather work with the police by reporting any criminal activities on the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111 or anonymously give tip-offs on MySapsApp."
