Former Congress of the People (Cope) leader and liberation struggle icon Mosiuoa “Terror” Lekota has died at the age of 77.

Lekota, who stepped away from politics last year, had been struggling with his health.

In a statement, Cope leader Teboho Loate said Lekota had died early on Wednesday, “after a period of illness”.

“The Lekota family has requested privacy during this difficult time, and the party asks the public and media to respect their wishes. The party will issue regular media statements to inform the nation about developments,” Loate said.

He added that details of memorial arrangements and tributes would be communicated.

“On behalf of the leadership, membership, and supporters of Cope, we extend our deepest condolences to the Lekota family and all South Africans who mourn this loss,” he said.

A former Robben Islander, Lekota played a key role in the formation of the United Democratic Front.

He was an ANC chairperson under Thabo Mbeki between 2002 and 2007, but left the party in disgust after the rise of Jacob Zuma.

He formed Cope in 2008. The party showed brief promise but withered after that.
