Three foreign nationals and a South African have been arrested after allegedly being found in possession of stolen Eskom infrastructure along the R33 between Vryheid and Paulpietersburg in KwaZulu-Natal.

The arrests followed the interception of the four suspects, aged between 41 and 44, by law enforcement officers on Wednesday while they were transporting an Eskom transformer.

It is alleged that the suspects also had other electricity-related equipment believed to have been stolen from public sites.

KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi stated that he believed the suspects might be part of a wider criminal network targeting vital service delivery infrastructure across the province.

He described the arrests as a breakthrough in the fight against infrastructure theft.

Buthelezi said:

These arrests come at a time when our communities are suffering under the weight of criminal syndicates who continue to sabotage service delivery by stealing millions of rands’ worth of infrastructure.

“I want to commend the South African Police Service and all law enforcement agencies involved in this operation. Their swift action sends a strong message that criminal syndicates will not be allowed to operate with impunity in our province.”

He urged communities to take an active stand against infrastructure theft by reporting suspicious activities in their areas.

“We must work together to safeguard the infrastructure that supports our daily lives. I urge all residents to come forward with any information that could lead to further arrests and successful prosecutions,” Buthelezi said.
