KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) government authorities called on motorists to exercise vigilance as inclement weather lashed the province on Sunday.

Four people died and 11 others were injured in separate motor vehicle accidents, which were attributed to the heavy rain.

On Sunday, most parts of KZN experienced wet weather.

According to Kwanele Ncalane, the spokesperson for the KZN transport department, the deceased were killed when a Toyota Tazz collided with a Toyota Fortuner on the R66 at Mayiwane intersection in uLundi.

"The vehicles collided head-on, and the cause of the accident is still a subject of an investigation," he said.

He added that two people were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

In a separate incident, eight people sustained "serious injuries" after two taxis collided on the R56.

In another incident, two trucks were involved in an accident on the Van Reenen's pass, forcing the closure of the N3.

Ncalane said traffic was being diverted to other alternative routes, such as the N11, which links KZN and Mpumalanga, and the R74, which links KZN and the Free State.

"The recovery team is currently on scene and is working hard to try and remove the two trucks and open the road to traffic," he said.

Ncalane continued:

Traffic officials and the police are also on [the] scene. Only one person sustained [a] serious injury and is being taken to hospital.

He added that road users were urged to postpone their travels on the N3, between Gauteng and KZN, or to postpone their trips until the accident scene was fully cleared.
