Wet weather is expected on Friday, with severe thunderstorms bringing heavy downpours, strong winds, hail and lightning across much of the country, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
Weather warnings are in place for KwaZulu-Natal (except the north-east), Gauteng, parts of Limpopo, the Mpumalanga Highveld, North West, Free State, and central to northern Eastern Cape, as well as the extreme eastern parts of the Northern Cape.
Localised flooding of roads, low-lying areas and bridges is likely, with potential damage to infrastructure, property and vehicles.
Meanwhile, the north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal can expect hot and humid conditions that will make for an extremely uncomfortable day. Morning fog patches will also affect visibility in the Free State, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
Impact-based warning:
Yellow Level 4 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning, leading to damage to infrastructure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock, as well as localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges are expected over KwaZulu-Natal, except in the north-east.
Yellow Level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning, leading to localised damage to infrastructure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock, as well as localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges are expected over the extreme eastern parts of the Northern Cape, North West, Free State, central and the northern parts of the Eastern Cape as well as the Mpumalanga Highveld, southern parts of Limpopo and Gauteng.
