Thunderstorms, excessive lightning, strong winds and heavy downpours are forecast in seven provinces, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Impact-based warnings

Yellow Level 4 for severe thunderstorms leading to flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, large amounts of small hail, strong damaging winds, heavy downpours and excessive lightning is issued for the central and western parts of the Free State.

Yellow Level 2 for severe thunderstorms leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, large amounts of small hail, strong damaging winds, heavy downpours and excessive lightning issued for the North West, the central and southern parts of Gauteng, the eastern parts of the Northern Cape and the Free State, as well as the Eastern Cape, excluding the extreme eastern parts.

Yellow Level 1 for severe thunderstorms leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, large amounts of small hail, strong damaging winds, heavy downpours and excessive lightning issued for the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.
