  • The driver escaped unharmed.
  • Meanwhile, five people were killed in a crash on the N3 near Ladysmith.

A truck carrying petrol and diesel exploded on the N2 north, near Edwin Swales Drive, south Durban, on Sunday.

According to the driver, the trailer had a rear tyre burst which seemed to have caused the explosion, Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Sindi Msimang said.

"It exploded because it conveyed multiple loads of fuel and diesel," she added.

Msimang said the driver escaped unharmed and the fire had been extinguished.

"The road was completely closed, but [officials] have opened two lanes on the northbound [part of the road]. They left the other lanes for cleaning-up purposes.

"The cleaning-up process is ongoing," Msimang added.

Meanwhile, two vehicles were involved in a crash on the N3 near Ladysmith.

Five people were killed and two were critically injured, including a young child, according to IPSS Medical Rescue.

"The patients were stabilised on scene and transported to nearby facilities for further care. Our condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased," IPSS spokesperson Sam Meyrick said.
