Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel is drawing his 15-year chapter in government to a close; he will not be returning to the Cabinet in the seventh administration.

In an interview with News24 on Wednesday, Patel said he had informed President Cyril Ramaphosa of his desire to exit government back in 2019, so the move did not come as a surprise.

Patel, a former trade unionist, has been at the helm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) since its formation under former president Jacob Zuma in 2009. He is a rarity among ministers in that he has not been implicated in any corruption scandals during his lengthy tenure at the helm of a crucial portfolio.
