A 36-year-old man has been traced and arrested for allegedly inciting public violence on TikTok by calling for the president's removal and the country to be shut down.

The Hawks in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, initiated an investigation with the help of crime intelligence to find the man following his utterances.

According to Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, the man said: "The country must be shut down, and the president must be removed."

"He was arrested, charged and detained pending his first court appearance on Monday, 24 June 2024, [in the] Nelspruit Magistrate's Court," Sekgotodi said.

She added that the man is facing charges of incitement of violence and contravention of Section 14 of the Cybercrimes Act, which reads: "Any person who discloses, by means of an electronic communication, a data message to a person or group of persons or the public in general with the intention to incite violence shall be guilty as charged."

Acting provincial head of the Hawks Brigadier Gregory Gaillard applauded the swift arrest.

He said the Hawks would protect South Africans and arrest anyone acting against the law without fear or favour.
