The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has appealed to the public along the Garden Route near Kleinjongensfontein not to touch a sealed 200kg blue container that washed ashore containing hazardous chemicals.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said a hazardous materials team would be at the scene on Saturday.

He said there might be three more containers either washed up or adrift at sea because such containers are usually palleted in fours.

The public and boaters are advised not to approach the containers, should they encounter them.

Instead, they must immediately notify the Garden Route disaster risk management unit on 044 805 5071 or the National Ambulance Services line on 10177.

Lambinon said:

There appear to be no reports of any dangerous chemical containers missing off any ship at sea, but this is being investigated.

"It remains unclear where the container originated."
