  • North West businessman Brown Mogotsi says he is “a member of the ANC in good standing”.
  • This comes after the party distanced itself from Mogotsi, who has been linked to controversial tender kingpin, Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala.
  • Mogotsi was implicated in claims by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that the country’s justice system had been captured.

Brown Mogotsi, a North West businessman allegedly connected to controversial tender kingpin, Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala, says he is an ANC member who is “in good standing”.

In an interview with the SABC on Monday, Mogotsi said his membership was only expected to end at the end of October. He told the broadcaster that he had proof of his membership.

“I’m a member of the ANC in good standing,” he said.

This comes after ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula publicly cautioned party members on Saturday against associating themselves with people such as Mogotsi. He said Mogotsi was not “of ANC calibre”.

Previously, the ANC also said Mogotsi was not a member.

But Mogotsi said on Monday that Mbalula’s utterances about him were unwarranted.

“My branch, which I have communicated with, is aware that my membership only expires at the end of October… This is the African National Congress, not Mbalula National Congress.”

Mogotsi added that he was ready and available to appear before the Madlanga Commission, which was set up to investigate KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegations that the criminal justice system had been captured.

He added that he was also ready to appear before the parliamentary ad hoc committee set up to investigate the allegedly “corrupt relationship” between Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who has since been put on special leave, and Mogotsi.

Mkhwanazi is expected to appear before the parliamentary committee on Tuesday.

News24 previously reported that a court heard last month that Mogotsi had attempted multiple times to contact Matlala, an attempted murder accused, on a secret prison phone on the day Mkhwanazi held a press conference in which he claimed the country’s justice system had been captured by criminals and dodgy businessmen. He implicated Mogotsi and Matlala.

Matlala has also been implicated in multiple high-profile cases, including botched hits on taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni and Seunkie Mokubung, also known as DJ Vettys.

In June last year, he also scored a now-cancelled R360-million police health tender, despite being under investigation in connection with Tembisa Hospital graft.
