In a desperate attempt to save her home and precious belongings, Johanna Pitt frantically threw buckets full of water out the front door of her dwelling in the Tiryville informal settlement in Kariega as more came gushing in at a frantic speed.

While Pitt, 71, ran to her front door, she was nearly hit by lightning when a thunderbolt struck the ground a few metres away, sending her reeling back against the door.

Holding her hand over her heart and looking up to the heavens, Pitt said: "I was screaming for help at the top of my lungs because I thought I was going to die. I thank the Lord for his mercy. He saved me, and I am still alive because of him."
