Details of a mediator’s attempts to restore peace and stability to a school rocked by protests after its principal was fired for misconduct have been laid bare in court documents by the Western Cape Education Department.
The head of the department, Brent Walters, is opposing a High Court application brought by Craig Dowman, a parent of a pupil attending Heathfield High School in Cape Town, to stop it from appointing a principal until a dispute over the dismissal of the previous headmaster, Wesley Neumann, has been resolved.
Neumann was dismissed on 20 May 2022 for defying an instruction to open his school during the Covid-19 pandemic.
