Whether it is the Electoral Commission of South Africa's (IEC) doing, or a wider nonchalance towards the current party-political system, dwindling voter turnout should concern the IEC ahead of this year's elections.

Research has shown that general displeasure with South Africa's democracy among eligible voters also affected the IEC, with the elections body among the country's distrusted institutions.

The November 2021 local government elections had the lowest turnout since the first democratic polls in 1994 – a paltry 46% (12 million people), of the 26.2 million registered voters cast their ballots.
