The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched an investigation into the death of a Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) student who was allegedly killed by police following a protest in Emalahleni on the weekend.

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said that the student, 22-year-old Thabelo Mbau, was assaulted at the Khayalethu Student Residence on Friday night at around 20:30.

He later died in hospital.
