While KwaZulu-Natal police are on high alert and all leave has been cancelled, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party says suspicions it would cause chaos over its claims of election fraud were misguided.

Senior party members said they first wanted to see how the country's justice system would treat their grievances with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) before deciding on a course of action.

On Sunday, the six-month-old party of former president Jacob Zuma, which won 46% of the vote in KwaZulu-Natal and 15% nationally, opened a criminal complaint in Pietermaritzburg alleging electoral fraud after its members stormed an IEC storage site and claimed to have found unmonitored, stamped ballot papers.
