South Africa rejected assertions by Israel's defence team that the statements made by top politicians, which called for the destruction of Gaza and the Palestinian people, were rhetorical and did not inform policy.

Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said he was shocked that Israel's defence team told the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that the quotes should not be ascribed any importance.

"They admit the statements are being made - but, astonishingly, claim that it was made by people out of power, not policymakers," Lamola said, adding that the comments explained the actions of soldiers on the ground in Gaza.
