The Free State High Court has sentenced Teboho Mokoena, 31, to life imprisonment for killing his 65-year-old mother, Modiehi Khodumo, and dismembering her body in June last year.

On Friday, Judge Joseph Mhlambi also sentenced Mokoena to five years for stabbing his father, Motsumi Joseph Mokoena, several times when he tried to confront him.

He was also given 12 months for malicious damage to property.

In June last year, Mokoena's father went to Khodumo's house and found the accused in the garage packing the remains of his mother into a plastic bag.

After he confronted him, Mokoena stabbed him several times.

When the police arrived at the house, they found a grinder and cut-up human remains in the garage.

It is believed that Khodumo was killed between 5 and 7 June 2022.

The accused allegedly had a tumultuous relationship with his parents because of a drug addiction, and was demanding money from his mother.

In aggravation, State advocate Nono Mkhabela presented three victim impact statements to court.

The statements were from the daughter, brother, and ex-husband of the Khodumo.

The daughter said she could not perform at university and had to repeat a semester because of the murder, and the ex-husband said his son had taken away a "most innocent soul", who was a pillar of strength to the family and community.

Mkhabela told the court that Mokoena had not shown any remorse and was clearly motivated by selfishness, a sense of entitlement, and greed.
