  • A police sergeant has been arrested in an early morning operation in Polokwane, Limpopo.
  • According to the allegations, the officer is linked to six murders, and some of the victims were mentally challenged.
  • It is alleged that she pocketed around R10 million from insurance payouts.

Police have pounced on one of their own, arresting a 43-year-old sergeant who allegedly murdered six people - some disabled or mentally challenged - for insurance payouts of around R10 million.

The sergeant was arrested at her workplace at the Senwabarwana police station in Limpopo after a lengthy investigation by Captain Keshi Mabunda into allegations that she was fraudulently benefitting from funeral, accidental and life policy cover from various banks and insurance companies

According to the investigations, the killing spree started in 2019.

"Her victims were known to her and were from destitute and disadvantaged backgrounds, and some were disabled or mentally challenged," police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said on Thursday.

The sergeant would take out life policies and funeral cover on their behalf and would be the sole beneficiary, it is alleged.

According to the allegations, she is linked to about six insurance-related murders and pocketed at least R10 million, Mathe said.

National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola described the officer as a "disgrace":

As a police officer you are entrusted with the safety and security of communities. For a police officer entrusted with such a great responsibility to be involved in such acts is an absolute disgrace.

"She abused her powers by insuring those that trusted her. This must send a strong warning to all involved that the long arm of the law will find you and catch you," Masemola added.

The sergeant is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Friday on six counts of murder and 17 of fraud.
