The NSRI said a man drowned after a boat capsized off Queen's Beach in Cape Town.

A 32-year-old man believed to be from Johannesburg has drowned, while his three friends were brought safely to shore, after their boat capsized on Christmas Eve just off-shore of Queens Beach, Bantry Bay, in Cape Town.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said its Bakoven and Table Bay duty crews were activated following reports of a rigid hull inflatable boat appearing to be in difficulty at about 19:00.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said it is believed the boat may have suffered mechanical failure before it capsized.
