Over half a ton of marijuana was recovered on Thursday after a 32-year-old man was pulled over on the R40 in Nelspruit.
He was carrying 21 bales of the herb, with an estimated street value of R3.3 million.
The man, Mfundo Manyike, was granted R5 000 bail in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Friday, charged with trafficking and dealing in marijuana.
According to police, members of the White River K9 Unit spotted a vehicle suspected of transporting dagga on the R40 Road.
When the vehicle was searched, police found 548 kilograms of marijuana, worth an estimated R3.3 million, and arrested Manyike.
The acting provincial police commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major-General Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrest and commended the members involved for their “swift response”.
He also expressed his appreciation for the information shared by members of the public, which he said had contributed to the operation’s success.
The case was postponed to 14 October for further investigation.
