A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to two life imprisonment terms for repeatedly raping his girlfriend.

In addition, Elias Tsetla from Lesotho was ordered to pay a R3 000 fine or face a three-month imprisonment term for violating the Immigration Act.

The sentencing took place in the Potchefstroom Regional Court this week.

The girlfriend reported the incident to Ikageng police in January 2023, and Tsetla was arrested three days later.

Evidence presented in court revealed that Tsetla accused the girlfriend of having relationships with other men.

A confrontation ensued, during which Tsetla assaulted and raped her twice.

“Following the girlfriend’s report, the case was investigated by the Potchefstroom Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Tsetla was arrested shortly after.

“After failing to prove his legal status in the country, Tsetla, who is from Lesotho, was further charged with contravening the Immigration Act, 2002,” police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said.

In addition to the two life sentences for the rapes, the court ordered that Tsetla’s name be entered in the National Register for Sex Offenders.
