Four people who were arrested at Nelson Mandela's home for allegedly kidnapping, robbing and assaulting an Uber driver made their first court appearance.

The four, together with Mandela's grandson, were arrested on Monday, but the former president's relative was conspicuous in his absence in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Magistrate JD Herman ordered the four accused together with Madiba's grandson not to be named and their images may not be published. This comes after the State made an application that the names and images of all five of the accused in the matter should not be published.

As the media waited for the case to be called, the grandson, who was arrested along with the other accused, did not enter the dock.

It is alleged on Tuesday that the five allegedly attacked an Uber driver on Louis Botha Avenue in Oaklands.

The driver's vehicle was later found at Mandela's Houghton home.

The accused are expected back in court on 17 January for an identity parade to be conducted while police investigations continue.
