KwaZulu-Natal ANC secretary Bheki Mtolo has lauded provincial chairperson Siboniso Duma's "heroic" act of grabbing the microphone from AmaZulu traditional prime minister Thulasizwe Buthelezi during the 110th Commemoration of King Dinuzulu at the weekend.

Mtolo came to Duma's defence during a press briefing in Durban on Wednesday, accusing Buthelezi of using the occasion - which was attended by AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, President Cyril Ramaphosa and KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube - to score "cheap political points," thus risking the reputation of the monarch.

"uMthombeni (Duma's clan name) was a real hero. Our ancestors came to him and told him: 'Our son, we gave you to the world so that you can prevent a catastrophe. Any sin that you commit, you will ask for forgiveness from the president, amakhosi, and the premier. But you would, at least in this case, prevent bloodshed'."
