The South African Weather Service has warned of flooding across several provinces.
Supplied/Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management services
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned people to brace for a wet and potentially dangerous day, with flooding warnings in place across several provinces.
It’s not all wet weather, though – northern parts of the country will see hot conditions, with temperatures reaching 34°C in Skukuza and Lephalale, and 35°C in Upington. But for most of South Africa, umbrellas and waterproof jackets will be essential.
Impact-based warnings:
Yellow level 4 warning: Severe thunderstorms leading to flooding are expected over the Overberg District Municipality and Langeberg Local Municipality in the Western Cape, as well as the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
Yellow level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms leading to localised flash flooding and large amounts of small hail are expected over the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality, Cape Winelands and Central Karoo Local Municipalities in the Western Cape, extreme eastern parts of Northern Cape, south-western parts of Free State, as well as Joe Gqabi, Chris Hani (excluding Inxuba Yethemba) District Municipalities, Matatiele, Umzimvubu, Ntabankulu and Mhlontlo Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape.
In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.
The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.
